Poptún is a municipality in the department of Petén, in the Republic of Guatemala. It is the second most populated municipality in the department and has a border with Belize.3 The climate is tropical, between 25 ° C and 30 ° C most of the year. Since 1989, Military Zone 23 in Poptún has been the base of the elite group «kaibiles», the special operations force of the Guatemalan Army. The municipality has a runway for light aircraft and south of it is the Ixobel Estate, with caves that constitute a tourist attraction.

Flora and fauna
Poptún, due to its biogeographic characteristics, is located at different elevations, which is why it has three types of natural vegetation: broadleaf or broadleaved forest, conifer forest and ecotonal or mixed forest.
